Traffic calming measures known as Dover Traffic Access Protocol (TAP) have been re-implemented in Kent due to the significant increase in traffic around the Port of Dover. These measures came into effect just after 11am on Tuesday 9th January 2024, affecting drivers on the A20 approaching Dover.
Under the Dover TAP scheme, all vehicles, including passenger cars and lorries, will be subject to a reduced speed limit of 40mph as they approach Dover via the A20. This traffic management initiative is aimed at preventing disruptions caused by heavy port-bound traffic to the local road network and the A20 route through Dover town.
Kent County Council (KCC) made the announcement via their official Twitter account, stating, “The Dover Traffic Access Protocol (TAP) scheme on the A20 at Aycliffe has been implemented due to heavy freight volumes. This is to prevent Portbound traffic from disrupting the local road network and the A20 through Dover town.”
What is Dover TAP? Dover TAP, introduced in April 2015, consists of a set of traffic restrictions designed to help Dover residents cope with the additional traffic generated by the Port of Dover. These measures also aim to improve air quality within the town.
When the Dover TAP is put into effect, the following restrictions come into play:
- A 40mph speed limit is enforced for all vehicles approaching Dover from the west via the A20.
- Lorry drivers heading to the port must remain in the left lane of the A20, from the Roundhill Tunnel until they reach the port.
- During peak traffic times, lorries queuing in the left lane may be held by traffic lights until space becomes available at the port.
- Lay-bys in the area may be temporarily closed, along with the coast-bound on-slip at the Courtwood junction, as required.
Authorities have underlined that violations of these rules may lead to drivers being turned back or even prosecuted. Monitoring of compliance is conducted through police officers and traffic cameras.
As the Dover TAP measures are re-implemented, travellers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and stay informed about any updates or changes to the restrictions.
