An accidental fire in a Chatham residence was triggered by a fallen candle that ignited a clothes air dryer, resulting in clothing catching fire. The incident occurred in a home on Salisbury Road, prompting the response of two fire engines and the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb).
Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus rapidly extinguished the blaze using a hose reel jet. Subsequently, they utilized a high-pressure fan to disperse smoke that had filled the residence.
During the incident, one individual sustained minor burns to their hand and received immediate care from SECAmb paramedics. Additionally, three other occupants were subjected to precautionary checks at the scene for potential smoke inhalation.
Fire authorities took this opportunity to remind the public of essential safety precautions when using candles:
- Never Leave Candles Unattended: Always remain present and vigilant when candles are lit, ensuring they are never left unattended.
- Use Sturdy Holders: Position candles in secure and stable holders, far from any flammable materials like clothing, plants, or curtains.
- Mind the Location: Avoid placing candles and tealights on windowsills or the floor, where drafts or accidental contact can lead to accidents.
- Ensure Smoke Alarms: Confirm that your home is equipped with functioning smoke alarms on every floor, regularly testing them. These alarms can be a lifesaving measure in the event of a fire.
Fire incidents caused by candles are relatively common and often result from simple oversights. Practising safety measures can prevent potentially life-threatening accidents and ensure the well-being of occupants and property.
In the face of such incidents, it is crucial to remain vigilant and prioritize fire safety within homes and public spaces.
