Southwark Man who killed his mum given hospital order

A man has been sentenced to a hospital order after killing his mother. Edward Watkins, 55 of Ethnard Road, SE15 fatally stabbed Maureen Watkins in her home in Southwark in November 2018. Police were called to the address on Ethnard Road at 16.04hrs and attended along with LAS. At the scene Watkins’ 75-year-old mother Maureen was found with multiple stab wounds. Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at 4.37pm. Detectives in the Homicide and Major Crime Command investigated and arrested Watkins on the same night. Appearing at the Central Criminal Court on Thursday, 9 May, Edward Watkins entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He was sentenced to a hospital order under sections 37/41 Mental Health Act.
