Evacuation And Safety Concerns: Bristol’s Barton House Deviates From Original Plans

Bristol’s Barton House, a tower block constructed in 1958, that was evacuated following potential structural risks has now been revealed that the building deviated from its original plans.

Approximately 400 residents were asked to leave due to structural risks, prompting concerns about the safety of similar constructions in the city.

Surveys on three of Barton House’s 98 flats uncovered a potential risk to the building’s structure in case of fire, explosion, or impact. Bristol City Council issued an immediate evacuation, describing it as a precautionary measure, while more thorough and invasive inspections are planned.

Documentation from 2018, revealed through a Freedom of Information request, disclosed that Barton House was part of five blocks in the city constructed with a large panel system. Surprisingly, there were no records of structural surveys since the 1970s, raising questions about the safety of these buildings.

Mayor Marvin Rees acknowledged that recent surveys indicated significant differences between Barton House’s construction and its original plans. Issues include the absence of structural ties, lower fire resistance, and reduced concrete cover, highlighting potential risks in the event of a fire or explosion.

With uncertainty about when residents can return, community members express shock and panic. Some residents describe chaotic evacuations, while concerns grow about the duration of temporary accommodations. Local leaders call for transparency and assurance from the council.

Residents, placed in hotels and temporary housing, share their discomfort and lack of trust in returning permanently. Concerns range from the safety of the building to the adequacy of information provided by the authorities.

Local community groups rally to support affected residents, providing essential items and expressing solidarity. However, criticism arises over the communication process, with some residents learning about the evacuation through news and social media rather than official channels.
