The United States has announced that it has conducted precision strikes on two facilities in eastern Syria, alleging their use by Iranian forces and affiliated groups. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that these strikes were carried out in self-defense, with the aim of protecting US personnel in Iraq and Syria. The decision was made in response to recent attacks by Iranian-backed militia groups.
Secretary Austin emphasised that the Iranian-backed attacks against US forces are unacceptable and need to cease. He further criticised Iran for attempting to conceal its involvement and deny responsibility for these attacks. The US stated it is determined not to allow Iran to continue such actions and has warned of additional measures if attacks by “Iran’s proxies” persist.
It is important to note that these strikes are separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Secretary Austin reiterated that the US approach has not shifted and urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate the situation into a broader conflict.
