Manchester City Football Club has unveiled a heartfelt tribute to the legendary former captain, Ilkay Gundogan, on his 33rd birthday. In recognition of Gundogan’s exceptional seven years of service to the club, a striking mosaic commemorating his historic title-winning goal against Aston Villa in 2022 has been installed by a training pitch at the City Football Academy.
Gundogan, the first City captain to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy, played a pivotal role in securing numerous honors during his tenure at the Etihad Stadium. The German midfielder clinched five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups, contributing to a trophy-laden era for Manchester City. His final season in England concluded with a spectacular FA Cup final brace at Wembley, propelling City to a historic Treble one week later in Istanbul.
Crafted by local Manchester sculptor Mark Kennedy, the mosaic stands as the latest in a series of tributes to departing City legends, following the likes of Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, and David Silva.
In a video message shared on the club’s channels to mark the pitch dedication, Manchester City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed gratitude and admiration for Gundogan’s significant contributions. Al Mubarak highlighted Gundogan’s role as a leader, both on the pitch and in the community.
“On behalf of His Highness Sheikh Mansour, on behalf of everyone associated with Manchester City, it is really my privilege and honour to unveil this mosaic that is a tribute to every accomplishment you’ve made as part of this Manchester City family over the years,” said Al Mubarak.
He continued, “You have been an important leader, an important pillar of a part of history – of the history of this club that will never be forgotten. Today I want to thank you on behalf of everyone associated with the club, and this mosaic is our gift to you to keep you part of the history of this club, of this institution, a place that you can come and always know that you have left an important stamp that will be never forgotten.”
The pitch dedication serves as a lasting acknowledgment of Gundogan’s legacy, ensuring his impact on Manchester City’s history remains etched in the hearts of the fans and the club.
