In a heartbreaking incident, 18-year-old Abbie Devanney, described as a “much-loved daughter, sister, and granddaughter,” tragically lost her life following a fatal collision on Brooms Lane near Leadgate. The incident took place on Saturday, October 21, at approximately 10pm.
Abbie, a resident of Consett, was a passenger in a blue Ford Fiesta that veered off the road near the Jolly Drovers pub. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving her family and community devastated. In a statement issued today, her family expressed their deepest regret and sorrow, emphasizing Abbie’s cherished role within the family. They thanked everyone for the outpouring of support they have received and requested privacy to mourn their loss.
The collision also left three other passengers severely injured. A teenage boy and two teenage girls remain in the hospital, receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Their condition is being closely monitored by healthcare professionals.
Following the incident, a 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the collision. He has been questioned by authorities and subsequently released under investigation, pending further inquiries into the matter.
Durham Constabulary are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their investigation. They are particularly interested in obtaining dash-cam footage of the vehicle involved prior to the collision.
