A 41-year-old man from Exeter has been convicted of sending sexual messages to a child over a two-year period. Steven Thomas was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on Thursday 5 October after a jury found him guilty earlier in the year.
Thomas has been sentenced to two years and four months in jail for causing/inciting a girl aged 13-15 to engage in sexual activity. In addition to his prison sentence, he will also be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a notification requirement for 10 years.
The charges stem from an investigation in which Thomas sent numerous sexual messages and requests to a girl from Taunton over a two-year period. The judge, during sentencing, commended the strength and resilience of Thomas’ victim throughout the investigation.
Detective Sergeant Louise Findlay, from Operation Bluestone, praised the victim for her courage in coming forward and reporting the incident. She also acknowledged the dedication of PC Shannon Eyres, the officer in charge of the case, for providing outstanding service and care to the victim.
Avon and Somerset Police have reiterated their commitment to providing support and care to victims of rape and serious sexual offences. They remain determined in their pursuit of individuals who commit such crimes.
