In a shocking incident that sent shockwaves through the community, a 38-year-old man named Lee Belsham has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in Knottingley. The assault took place on Sowgate Lane on the afternoon of March 6th.
The victim, who was walking in the park at the time, was suddenly attacked from behind by Belsham. He forcefully tackled her to the ground before subjecting her to a horrifying sexual assault. Witnesses on the scene observed a man fleeing from the area, and thanks to CCTV footage, police officers were able to identify Belsham as the perpetrator.
Belsham, formerly of Ferrybridge Road, Knottingley, confessed to the sexual assault during a court hearing last month. On Friday (6/10), he appeared before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing, where he received a seven-year prison term. In addition to his jail time, Belsham was also given an extended license for another three years.
Detective Inspector Rachel Darling from Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit commended the victim for her immense bravery in reporting the crime to the police. She acknowledged the terrifying and horrendous ordeal that the victim had to endure and expressed hope that the sentence would bring her some closure.
DI Darling also praised the dedicated investigation team in Wakefield, who worked tirelessly to ensure that Belsham faced justice for his heinous actions. She urged anyone who has experienced any form of sexual crime to come forward and report it to the police, emphasising that specially-trained officers are available to provide support and advice throughout the process.
The victim, who remains anonymous for legal reasons, expressed gratitude for the unwavering support and kindness she received from the police since the incident occurred. She highlighted the efforts of the officer handling her case and stated that she had been waiting for this day for seven months. With the sentencing, she now feels empowered to begin anew and move forward, vowing not to let the perpetrator destroy her life.
