The National Crime Agency (NCA) has launched an investigation following the recovery of a substantial amount of suspected cocaine along the coasts of Dorset and Hampshire. Holdalls containing hundreds of kilograms of powder were discovered in the sea near St Aldhelm’s Point and Durdle Door in Purbeck. Additionally, a further quantity of the illegal substance washed up on a beach on the Isle of Wight earlier today.
A fisherman made the initial discovery on Monday, October 2, 2023, and promptly alerted the Dorset Police. Currently, the packages are undergoing analysis to confirm the exact contents and quantity.
The NCA, in collaboration with Border Force, Dorset Police, and Hampshire Police, is supporting the investigation. Senior investigating officer Tracey Lake from the NCA stated that the seized drugs are believed to be a significant amount of class A narcotics originating from South America. The loss of such a consignment would inflict a severe blow to the criminal networks involved.
Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell of Dorset Police emphasised the diligent efforts of their marine team, alongside colleagues from other units and HM Coastguard, in recovering the suspect packages. She urged the public not to handle any holdall or similar package found under suspicious circumstances but to immediately contact Dorset Police.
Farrell reiterated the unwavering commitment of the police force to collaborate with partner agencies relentlessly, pursuing criminals and organised gangs involved in drug supply offences to ensure public safety.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Murray stated that their search efforts were ongoing across the West Wight after numerous packages were discovered by a group involved in litter picking. He urged anyone who discovers suspicious bags or packages along the Hampshire and Isle of Wight coastline to contact the authorities immediately.
Murray also appealed for a man in his 60s, a member of the litter picking group, to come forward as a potential witness. The individual is described as slim, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, with short grey hair and a birthmark on the right side of his mouth.
In case of locating any suspicious packages, the public is advised to call emergency services at 999, where call handlers will provide further guidance.
