In a shocking case that left a man with severe eye injuries, Craig Rose, a violent offender, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after launching a ruthless acid attack outside a pub in Worksop town centre. The unprovoked assault occurred around 03:20 on February 12, 2023.
Rose, 43, of Shrewsbury Road, Worksop, shouted ‘acid’ as he carried out the attack, causing irreparable damage to the victim’s right eye and inflicting burns to his lips and tongue. The corrosive substance, still unidentified, severely damaged the cornea, ensuring the victim will never regain full sight in his right eye. His left eye also suffered damage during the brutal assault.
The incident unfolded when Rose, riding a bicycle, confronted the victim in Victoria Square, Worksop. After a threatening exchange, Rose unleashed the unknown substance from a drinks bottle, causing immediate and intense burning sensations in the victim’s eyes and mouth.
A passerby, coincidentally in a car, provided remnants of Coca Cola and melted ice to help wash away the corrosive substance. The victim sought medical attention at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop and later at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where the extent of his injuries was revealed by eye specialists.
Craig Rose, having earlier admitted to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on October 6, receiving an 18-month jail term. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, with police suspecting that the corrosive substance may have been intended for someone else.
Detective Constable Christine Hewlett of Nottinghamshire Police emphasised the recklessly dangerous nature of Rose’s attack, leaving the victim with potentially life-long injuries. A determined police effort, including a high-profile media appeal, led to Rose’s discovery hiding in a loft.
