A deadly incursion by Hamas into Israel has left at least 22 Israelis dead and 545 injured, as confirmed by official sources and emergency services. The Magen David Adom teams, operating on the front lines, pronounced the casualties as of 13.00 local time, revealing the extent of the ongoing attack.
The health ministry provided an official figure of 545 injuries, underlining the severity of the situation. Emergency services released a statement, stating, “Magen David Adom teams have pronounced 22 victims deceased. They have also treated hundreds of further victims.”
Simultaneously, an Iranian official has expressed support for Hamas’s actions. Unverified reports quote Rahim Safavi, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei, congratulating Palestinian fighters and pledging Iranian support “until the liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem.” The Iranian government has not officially confirmed these statements.
In response to the incursion, Israel’s Defence Forces (IDF) launched Operation “Swords of Iron.” Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari provided details, stating, “At this time, the IDF is reinforcing the south and the communities surrounding the Gaza Strip with several operational forces.” The mobilisation includes reservists from various units, with a focus on protecting residents of southern Israel.
The IDF’s statement revealed that numerous fighter jets targeted Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The military action underscores the seriousness of the situation and Israel’s commitment to responding to the threat posed by the militant group.
Internationally, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Opposition Leader Sir Keir Starmer have both condemned the incursion. Prime Minister Sunak expressed shock at the attacks by Hamas terrorists, affirming Israel’s right to defend itself. He assured that the government was in contact with Israeli authorities and urged British nationals in Israel to follow local travel advice.
Opposition Leader Sir Keir Starmer condemned the “act of terror” and stressed that there is no justification for the ongoing attacks. He acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself while emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution in the region. The statements reflect the global concern and condemnation of the escalating situation in the Middle East.
