Gavin Plumb, a 36-year-old resident of Potters Field, Harlow, appeared in Chelmsford Magistrates Court on Friday, facing charges related to an alleged plot to kidnap TV presenter Holly Willoughby. Plumb, charged with offences including soliciting to commit murder and incitement to commit kidnap, spoke only to confirm personal details during the hearing.
The prosecution alleges that between Monday and Thursday, Plumb collaborated with a third party to formulate a plan. He purportedly encouraged the third party, who was due to arrive in the UK from the US next week, to carry out the plan. Plumb is accused of assembling a kidnap and restraint kit designed to encourage or assist in the commission of the alleged crime against Willoughby.
District Judge Caroline Jackson remanded Plumb into custody until a plea hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on November 3. Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby emphasised the swift and intensive nature of the investigation, with officers and national partners working overnight to secure charges.
Expressing shock and concern, ITV’s This Morning presenters Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond sent their “love and biggest hugs” to their colleague Holly Willoughby. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, appearing on This Morning, conveyed his apologies and sent his love to Willoughby and her family.
A spokesperson for ITV stated, “This news has come as a huge shock to everyone at This Morning and ITV. We are providing all the support we can to Holly and her family at this incredibly distressing time.” ITV is also collaborating with law enforcement to ensure round-the-clock security and support for Willoughby.
The safeguarding of the victim is a top priority for the police, and Detective Superintendent Kirby affirmed ongoing cooperation with the Metropolitan Police Service as the investigation progresses. Plumb was arrested on Wednesday, and the court proceedings will continue at Chelmsford Crown Court next month.
