Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation after the discovery of a body in a concealed area of Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland. The somber find has prompted a significant police presence and the sealing of a section of the cemetery.
The incident unfolded on Sunday evening when officers were summoned to Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, located off Chester Road, following reports of a body discovered in the vicinity. Upon arrival, a large section of the cemetery was cordoned off with police tape, and an initial inquiry was initiated.
As the investigation progressed, a heightened police presence remained in the area, On Tuesday, a cordon remained in place, and a tent had been erected at the site. Forensic officers were also present, diligently examining the scene for evidence.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police provided the following statement: “Shortly before 6.20pm on Sunday, police received a report of a body being found in a concealed grassy area near to Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland. Officers remain at the scene to carry out inquiries, and an investigation has been launched into the discovery.”
