A former police officer, PC Mark Slade, has pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault by touching during a court appearance at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 25, 2023. PC Slade, aged 48 and formerly stationed at West Mercia Police headquarters in Hindlip, Worcestershire, had resigned from the force in September of the same year.

The case dates back to an incident that occurred during a night out in Maidstone in January 2023. During this night, PC Slade committed sexual assault by touching five victims without their consent in a sexual manner. These serious allegations led to his suspension by the police force in February 2023, within just 72 hours of his arrest by Kent Police.

The guilty plea by PC Slade means that he has accepted responsibility for his actions and the consequences that follow. He is now awaiting sentencing, which will be determined by the Maidstone Crown Court. The exact date for his sentencing is yet to be confirmed.

Deputy Chief Constable Alex Murray issued a statement in response to PC Slade’s guilty plea. He remarked, “This is an example of an officer who has no place in policing. I’m pleased that he has pleaded guilty and spared his victims the distress of a trial.”

Murray further praised the courage of the victims for coming forward and commended the investigative efforts of Kent Police, which led to the conviction. He emphasised the commitment of the police force to maintaining the highest standards and ensuring that officers who engage in misconduct are thoroughly investigated and held accountable.

Murray concluded, “The vast majority of officers and staff are excellent – and it is these few that we will have no hesitation in pursuing.”
