In a sombre turn of events, Motorsport Ireland has confirmed the unfortunate death of a competitor following a collision during the Clare Stages Rally.
The fatal incident occurred around 1.30pm on Sunday in the Glencolumbkille area of Carron, casting a pall over the motorsport community. The man, in his 30s, was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision. The impact occurred during the rally’s fourth stage, a moment that was meant to be filled with adrenaline and excitement.
Tragically, the competitor was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been transported to University Hospital Limerick, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place.
The driver of the other vehicle, another man, has been transferred to University Hospital Limerick as well, where he is receiving medical care for injuries that are fortunately not believed to be life-threatening.
Two other males, one driver and one passenger from each car, emerged from the collision unscathed.
Local authorities and emergency services acted swiftly, with an on-site team being the first to attend to the incident. Their rapid response was followed by further emergency services arriving at the scene.
Motorsport Ireland expressed their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased competitor. The entire racing community is mourning this profound loss, which serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in motorsport.
