A massive manhunt is underway as the U.S. Marshal’s Office takes charge of the search for a homicide suspect who was erroneously released from an Indiana jail earlier this month. A reward of up to $10,000 is now being offered in connection with this urgent case.
The suspect in question, 28-year-old Kevin Mason, had been in custody in Indiana in connection with a 2021 homicide case in Minnesota. However, due to a “faulty records review by civilian staff,” he was mistakenly released on September 13, 2023, sending shockwaves through law enforcement circles.
In response to this grave error, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office took swift action. Two employees of the sheriff’s office were terminated from their positions two days after Mason’s release, as detailed in an official release.
Taking over the search for Kevin Mason, the U.S. Marshals launched an intensive operation earlier this week. Their extensive network of 56 regional task forces, which captured nearly 76,000 fugitives in 2022, is now focused on locating Mason and returning him to custody.
Sheriff Kerry Forestal expressed his confidence in the U.S. Marshals’ capabilities, stating, “With 56 regional task forces and their capture of nearly 76,000 fugitives in 2022, I am fully confident they will locate Kevin Mason and bring him into custody.”
The latest information indicates that Mason is believed to have left Indianapolis on the same day he was mistakenly released, September 13. Law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions where Mason is believed to have connections have been alerted and are cooperating in the search.
In addition to his involvement in the 2021 homicide case, Kevin Mason is also wanted for a parole violation and illegal possession of a firearm, amplifying the urgency of his apprehension.
Describing Mason, authorities provided the following physical details: he stands at 5 feet 9 inches and weighs approximately 205 pounds. Notably, he has a tattoo of a cross under his right eye and “SUB” tattooed on his chest, which could aid in his identification.
As law enforcement agencies intensify their efforts to locate and apprehend Kevin Mason, the public is urged to assist by reporting any information about his whereabouts.
