London’s Blackwall Tunnel experienced a temporary closure this afternoon due to reports of smoke. The London Fire Brigade responded to the scene at 12:50 pm on Saturday, September 23.
As a precautionary measure, authorities implemented road closures around the tunnel, but subsequent investigations by fire crews confirmed that there was no actual fire.
Despite the absence of a fire, the incident led to “major delays” in both directions, affecting traffic flow in the area.
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade shared on Twitter: “We were called to the Blackwall Tunnel at 12.50 pm due to a report of smoke. Closures have subsequently been in place as a precaution. Following investigation, we’ve established there is no fire. There are major delays in both directions, which could take some time to clear.”
Drivers in the vicinity are advised to consider alternative routes or to exercise patience as traffic congestion may persist while the situation normalizes.
