Traffic on the M25 faced significant disruptions following a van fire, leading to emergency repairs and delays in the vicinity of Clacket Lane Services. Emergency services were swift to respond, but the incident necessitated the temporary closure of lanes on the motorway.
The incident began with the van fire, resulting in the need for recovery and cleanup operations on the M25 clockwise between Junction 5 for the M26 interchange and Junction 6 for Clacket Lane Services. While the vehicle was recovered, the aftermath required the continued closure of two lanes to ensure safe driving conditions.
National Highways issued a warning to drivers, indicating that the ongoing lane closures could lead to delays of up to 45 minutes. Kent Fire and Rescue Service promptly extinguished the fire, but repair work and clearing of spillage contributed to the extended delays.
As the situation unfolded, traffic congestion affected the surrounding areas, with backups stretching to approximately Junction 4 (Orpington) on the M25, as well as the A21 in Chipstead and the A25 Main Road leading to the B2211 Chevening Road in Sundridge.
Despite ongoing efforts to reopen lanes and resume regular traffic flow, drivers expressed frustration at those who continued to use closed lanes, marked with red crosses on gantries above. Some called for stricter penalties for motorists disregarding lane closures, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety measures.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution and patience when travelling through the affected area, and updates on the situation are provided to keep motorists informed of the latest developments.
