A dedicated police officer who tragically lost his life in a car collision in Smethwick has been identified as Sergeant Paul Frear, an esteemed member of the West Midland Police
Sergeant Frear, aged 45, was critically injured when he was struck by a car while on his way to work yesterday morning, near Smethwick Rolfe Street Station in Tollhouse Way. Despite the best efforts to save him, Paul sadly passed away the following morning, surrounded by his loving family.
Tributes have poured in for Sergeant Paul Frear, who devoted his entire career to serving the communities, colleagues, and officers of Wolverhampton. He had an impressive 21-year tenure with the West Midlands Police, having joined the force in August 2002. For the past five years, he had been a valuable member of the Low Hill, Bushbury, and Fallings Park neighbourhood teams.
In 2017, Sergeant Frear’s exemplary service was recognised when he received a Chief Constable’s Award for his quick response in providing emergency first aid at the scene of a double stabbing outside a Wolverhampton nightclub. Thanks to his swift action, both victims survived the harrowing incident.
West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford expressed condolences and pledged support to the officer’s family during this difficult time. He remarked, “We are offering all the support we can to his wife and their two children and his wider family too at this awful time. We know how deeply this will affect those who knew him and worked with him and indeed the whole policing family. As a mark of respect, we will be flying the Force flags at half-mast.”
Simon Foster, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, also paid tribute to Sergeant Frear’s dedication and service to the community. Foster said, “Sergeant Paul Frear committed his working life to serving the people of the West Midlands. He was a dedicated and popular member of the force throughout his 21 years’ service. My thoughts, and those of everyone within my office, are with his family, particularly his wife and children. I know that West Midlands Police will provide them with all the support they need.”
Authorities are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone with information to come forward. Individuals can contact the West Midlands Police at 101, quoting log 649 of September 21, 2023.
