Greater Manchester Police in Leigh have launched an appeal for information after reports of vandalism to Leigh Cenotaph on Church Street. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime around 16.20 BST on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Authorities were made aware of the graffiti on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
Inspector Sam Davies of Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan Neighbourhood Team expressed concern about the incident, stating, “Understandably, this crime has caused an outcry within the local community, and we are now in a position to appeal for the public’s help in providing any information they may have to assist us with our ongoing inquiries.”
He further emphasised the importance of community support, saying, “Residents have been fully supportive and cooperative of our work to find those responsible. I want to stress that this investigation is in an early stage, and we continue to appeal to anyone with information about those responsible for this crime to contact us.”
Inspector Davies also made it clear that such acts of mindless criminal damage would not be tolerated in the community. The police’s objective is to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
