Former Australian cricket star Stuart MacGill, known for his remarkable spin bowling career, finds himself in legal trouble as he faces charges in connection with a large cocaine supply conspiracy. Police arrested the 52-year-old in Sydney on Tuesday, adding a new chapter to a case that began with his alleged abduction and assault in 2021.
MacGill, who represented Australia in 44 Test matches, has not yet entered a plea but has consistently denied any involvement in drug trafficking. His legal woes stem from an incident in April 2021 when he reported being abducted and subjected to physical violence in the Sydney suburb of Cremorne.
According to MacGill’s account, he was forced into a car, taken to a remote location on the city’s outskirts, and threatened at gunpoint. He was later released after being transported to a third location. While MacGill sustained minor injuries during the alleged abduction, he did not require medical treatment.
At the time, both MacGill and the authorities portrayed him as a victim of the crime. Six individuals, including MacGill’s then-partner’s brother, were subsequently charged in connection with the abduction.
However, a two-year-long investigation has now led to additional charges against MacGill, accusing him of participating in the supply of a significant quantity of cocaine. Local media reports suggest that the alleged drug deal involved over $300,000 worth of cocaine.
Stuart MacGill has been released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on October 26th to address these charges. The former cricketing legend, who enjoyed a stellar career on the pitch, now faces a legal battle that could have significant consequences for his reputation and future.
In the world of sports, another rising star, Ludvig Åberg, continues to shine on the golf course. The 23-year-old Swede, who turned professional in June and earned a Ryder Cup wild card, made an impressive start to the BMW PGA Championship. Playing alongside world number two Viktor Hovland and golf icon Rory McIlroy, Åberg posted a four-under-par 68 score despite a challenging double bogey on the 17th hole. His remarkable performance included five consecutive birdies from the 11th hole, capping it off with another birdie on the final hole, rebounding from the setback on the 17th.
Rory McIlroy, who recently expressed his support for Åberg’s burgeoning career, had a more challenging day on the course, finishing with a level-par 72. Meanwhile, FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland carded a 69, but it was Åberg who stole the spotlight with his outstanding play, solidifying his status as one of golf’s most promising talents.
