In a shocking development, Detective Constable Stephen Hardy of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for heinous crimes including rape and sexual assault against a child. The sentencing was carried out by Judge Robert Trevor-Jones at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, showcasing the severity of the crimes committed.
During the trial, it was revealed that DC Hardy had used his teenage victim as a “puppet or sex object,” according to Judge Trevor-Jones. The 46-year-old police officer was found guilty of 20 offences, including six counts of rape. The judge expressed his dismay at Hardy’s lack of remorse, stating that the defendant’s actions demonstrated a highly calculated and cynical course of grooming behavior.
Judge Trevor-Jones further described Hardy as having a “devious” personality with a “sinister streak.” Notably, Hardy’s position as a long-serving police officer added aggravating factors to his conviction. The judge stressed that he was well aware of the widespread and lasting trauma inflicted upon victims of sexual abuse, yet he callously disregarded their suffering.
The court proceedings were attended by the victim, who bravely reported the abuse to the police in 2020. In an impactful statement read to the court, she expressed her fear and lack of trust in authority figures. The victim was deeply affected by Hardy’s position within the Greater Manchester Police force, emphasising the importance of holding those in power accountable for their actions.
During the hearing, the prosecuting lawyer, Vanessa Thomson, described Hardy as “a controlling and manipulative man.” The victim’s statement shed light on the lasting mental health effects and the fear she experienced for her future as a result of the abuse.
In his defence, Hardy continued to deny all offences, with his legal counsel, Laura Nash, highlighting the challenging nature of his prison sentence, particularly due to his former position as a police officer. As the sentencing concluded, a supporter of Hardy expressed her affection for him, underscoring the emotional impact of the case on those involved.
Following Hardy’s conviction in July, GMP immediately suspended him from duty and announced that he would face disciplinary proceedings. Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Allen, Head of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, emphasised the necessity of holding Hardy accountable, both legally and within the police disciplinary system.
Now that DC Hardy has been convicted, the disciplinary proceedings against him will move forward, ensuring justice is served and assuring the public that officers who abuse their position will not escape consequences. GMP has made it clear that Hardy will not receive any salary during the time it takes for the disciplinary case to be heard, reaffirming their commitment to upholding standards and regaining the trust of the community.
