A substantial fire engulfed a residential block in Greenwich today (Thursday, August 17), prompting a rapid response from six fire engines and the London Ambulance Service.

The fire erupted at approximately 2:46 pm on Thornham Street, igniting within a residential complex. The alarming incident prompted the deployment of emergency services, with vivid images and videos capturing plumes of smoke billowing across the vicinity.

Two individuals were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service personnel, indicating the potentially hazardous conditions caused by the blaze.

The London Fire Brigade’s spokesperson detailed the response: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters responded to a fire on Thornham Street in Greenwich. The fire took place in a residential block. Two people have been treated by the London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation. The brigade was first called at 14:08 and has received over 20 calls reporting the fire.”

Firefighters from various stations, including Greenwich, East Greenwich, and Lewisham, swiftly converged at the scene to battle the flames and mitigate the situation.

While the fire’s exact origin remains under investigation, the Metropolitan police clarified that they provided assistance with road closures due to the incident. They also confirmed that there were no reports of serious injuries, and the fire was promptly extinguished. Authorities have noted that the cause of the fire is not deemed suspicious.
