Detectives investigating a tragic double murder in Islington have charged a man in connection with the crime. Abel Chunda, a 27-year-old resident of Highgate Hill, N19, has been charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and possession of an offensive weapon.
Chunda has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 5. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old male who was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder has been released on bail. Both individuals were taken into custody on Monday, July 3.
The families of the victims have been informed about the charges. The deceased has been identified as 15-year-old Leonardo Reid and a 23-year-old man. Specially trained officers are providing support to grieving families during this difficult time.
The incident unfolded on Thursday, June 29, when the police received reports of a stabbing on Elthorne Road, N19, at around 23:33. Upon arrival, officers, accompanied by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, discovered Leonardo Reid, the 15-year-old victim, with fatal stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight.
During the investigation, it was revealed that a 23-year-old man had also sustained stab injuries and was rushed to a West London hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his wounds. Post-mortem examinations have indicated that both victims died as a result of stab wounds to the chest.
Additionally, a third victim believed to be 28 years old, was found with a stab wound at an address in N19. He was taken to a north London hospital and is currently in stable condition.
Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command, with the support of colleagues from the Central North Command Unit, are leading the investigation into this distressing incident.
Previously, a 46-year-old man, identified as individual A, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. However, he was subsequently released without further action.
