Massive Fire Erupts at Veolia Blue Haze Landfill
Eighty firefighters from Hampshire and Dorset launched a fierce battle to tame a giant blaze erupting in a massive 50ft deep, 30ft wide hole at the Veolia Blue Haze Landfill in Somerley, near Ringwood. Crews were scrambled just after 7.30pm to tackle the inferno.
High-Powered Pumps Battle Relentless Flames
Fire commanders have called in two high-volume pumps from Hampshire and Dorset, each capable of blasting 14,000 litres of water per minute—usually used for floods—to help douse the fire. A mile of heavy-duty hoses snakes from the site along Ringwood Road into Somerley Village, where residents have been warned to keep windows and doors firmly shut against the choking smoke.
Firefighters Brace for a Long Night
Staff and managers at Veolia praised the firefighters for their professionalism and swift action. A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) spokesperson confirmed: “There are currently 14 fire appliances and numerous personnel at the scene. Our crews are working tirelessly to get the fire under control.”
The spokesperson added crews will likely remain overnight, with fresh teams arriving to relieve the exhausted firefighters who have been battling since the blaze began.
