Teen Duo Guilty After Innocent Man Killed in Crazy Car Chase
A second teenager has been convicted over the tragic death of Neil Darnell, 50, who was struck by a speeding car in Waltham Abbey. Neil was found seriously injured on Farm Hill Road after the hit-and-run on Friday 16 April.
Barber Shop Threat Sparks High-Speed Horror
Earlier that morning, CCTV showed two teens at Le Golden Touch barbers on Market Square. An unknown man approached and threatened them, then slashed the tyres of their car before fleeing by bike. Despite the damage, the teens jumped into their grey BMW and chased the man at reckless speeds.

Tragically, Neil was crossing the junction on Farm Hill Road when the car struck him. He suffered a traumatic head injury and died in hospital two days later. The driver fled, leaving the damaged car abandoned nearby.
Justice Served at Chelmsford Crown Court
- 17-year-old from Cheshunt, the driver, found guilty of murder.
- 17-year-old from Hertford, passenger, found guilty of manslaughter.
- Both teenagers will be sentenced in December.
Detective’s Grim Warning
“What looked like dangerous driving turned out much worse,” said Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood. “The teens deliberately tried to hit the cyclist and showed zero care when they hit Neil. They didn’t even try to help him, only tried to cover up their crime.
“Nothing brings Neil back, but we hope his family finds some comfort knowing justice was done.”
