Father and Son Jailed for Life Over Vigilante Murder
David King, 56, and his son Edward King, 20, both from Radnor Close, were sentenced to life imprisonment today at Ipswich Crown Court. David must serve a minimum of 21 years, Edward 19, after their unanimous murder conviction last May following a grueling 10-week trial.
Fatal Stabbing During Late-Night Vigilante Raid
At 3:55am on Sunday, 20 June 2021, police were called after David King reported a man attempting to steal from his car on the Moreton Hall estate. David admitted to having a knife and said the suspect claimed to be injured before fleeing.
Officers found David near Winsford Road — the scene of the stabbing — and located the victim, Neil Charles, 47, of Bury St Edmunds, farther along the road with a serious chest wound. Neil was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital but died two days later.
Weapons, Texts and Vigilante Justice
David and Edward used CCTV footage to spot Neil trying car and house door handles. Instead of calling the cops, they armed themselves with weapons and set out to confront him. David wielded a Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife; Edward carried a 27-inch ninja sword.
- David’s knife inflicted the fatal 12cm wound to Neil’s chest.
- Edward’s sword caused a horizontal wound above Neil’s left knee and was used to stab his bicycle tyre.
The victim was some distance from the Kings’ home, heading away when they caught him.
Police uncovered a cache of weapons at the Kings’ home, including lock knives, knuckle dusters, and a samurai sword. Text analysis revealed a dark obsession with weapons and violent intentions, including discussions about stabbing thieves back in 2019.
‘No Remorse’ for Killing, Police Say
Detective Chief Inspector Karl Nightingale, Senior Investigating Officer, said: “Neil Charles had a family who loved him and was due to be married in August 2021. His life was taken needlessly by David and Edward King, who pursued and murdered him in the early hours of 20 June 2021.”
“Neil was caught committing crime that night, but the Kings’ actions were deliberate. Their obsession with weapons and threats of violence stretched back years.”
