Knife Attack on Two Manchester Sergeants Ends in Dramatic Taser Arrest
Two Greater Manchester Police sergeants were violently attacked with a knife during what should have been a routine stop. Sergeants Marc Foster and Tim Ansell were on hand providing support after a moped failed to stop on July 26, 2023. PC Marcus Wolstencroft and his student had chased and detained the rider, but things quickly spiralled out of control.
Sudden Knife Assault Shocks Officers at the Scene
As PS Foster spoke to those involved, a man snuck up behind him and launched a savage knife attack, targeting Foster’s throat. Struggling to defend himself, Foster was shoved aside when the attacker turned his fury on PS Ansell, stabbing repeatedly at his neck.
Quick-Thinking Officer Uses Taser to Save Lives
PC Wolstencroft stepped in amidst the chaos, calmly deploying his Taser. The first attempt failed, but undeterred, he fired again and incapacitated the assailant. This crucial moment allowed the officers to restrain and detain the dangerous man, preventing further harm.
Wolstencroft maintained remarkable composure, even apologising for swearing in front of bystanders during the brutal incident.
Heroic First Aid and Officer Bravery Prevent Tragedy
PS Foster rushed to aid his wounded colleague, delivering lifesaving first aid by plugging the bleeding wounds with his bare hands and reassuring PS Ansell until paramedics arrived.
PS Foster sustained slash wounds to his neck and arms, while PS Ansell suffered two deep neck wounds (one requiring vein cauterisation and stitches) along with multiple slash injuries.
Chief Superintendent Colette Rose said: “These officers faced an unimaginable life-threatening situation after attending a seemingly routine stop. Their bravery and professionalism prevented further injury and protected the public. We are exceptionally proud of their actions.”
Mike Peake, Chair of Greater Manchester Police Federation, added: “The brutal, unprovoked attack highlights the daily dangers police face. These officers showed incredible bravery, risking their lives to detain a dangerous offender. Without their swift teamwork, it is a miracle they survived.”
The attacker later pleaded guilty to attempted murder in court, confirming his deadly intention to kill police officers on duty.
