Tragedy struck at an Asda supermarket car park in Oldham when 78-year-old Margaret Crichton was fatally hit by a van. The incident occurred as she was walking back to her car, leaving her family and community in deep mourning.
Margaret’s family described her as a “beautiful soul taken from us too soon.” They remembered her as a “dear sister, friend, aunt and great aunt” who will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
The collision happened on December 18 in Greater Manchester. Margaret sustained life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to Salford Royal Hospital. Despite emergency CPR being administered at the scene, she sadly passed away the following day, December 19.
Following the incident, police arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. An inquest into Margaret’s death began at Rochdale Coroners’ Court but was paused while police investigations continue.
Margaret Crichton was born in Wallsend, Northumberland, and lived in Shaw, Oldham. She was a retired midwifery tutor at the University of Manchester. Her sudden passing has left her family and the local community devastated.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic crash. The coroner will resume the inquest once all inquiries have been completed.
