Bob Carpenter, aged 84, has been a well-known presence on the Avanti West Coast network for almost 35 years. He works part-time as a Train Manager, greeting passengers warmly while based out of London Euston. Bob’s passion for trains started in South London and has made him one of the oldest active train managers in the UK.
Born in June 1942 and raised near the Brighton Main Line, Bob’s interest in trains was inspired by his father and a British Rail careers event. Although he missed an early chance to join the railway due to school commitments, he spent 20 years working with Royal Mail before following his dream by joining British Railways in 1992 as catering staff.
Railway work runs in the Carpenter family. Bob’s grandson, Nick, 37, also entered the industry, progressing from catering to Train Manager. Nick fondly remembers Bob’s stories from his childhood and treasures a train whistle that Bob used, which Nick now uses during his own shifts on the West Coast line.
Colleagues at Avanti West Coast admire Bob’s infectious smile and dedication. Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience Director, describes him as a fantastic role model who shows that it is never too late to pursue one’s dream job.
Among Bob’s most memorable experiences are the lively Grand National Specials of the 1990s, known for their laughter and camaraderie. Today, he continues to enjoy travelling across the West Midlands and North West, providing a friendly presence to passengers and fellow staff.
