The A20 Roundhill Tunnel has been shut after a massive diesel spill caused chaos on Kent’s coastbound route. National Highways has halted traffic through the tunnel as specialist cleanup crews work to clear the spill and reopen this essential road.
The closure affects the section between the M20/A259 near Folkestone and the A260 near Hawkinge. This shutdown came into effect on Tuesday, January 6. Authorities are warning drivers to expect delays and to follow posted diversion signs carefully.
For those heading eastbound, the recommended diversion follows the hollow circle sign. Drivers should exit the M20 at junction 13, then take the A259 Churchill Avenue east to the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout. From there, continue north on the A260 before rejoining the A20 coastbound at the Spitfire Way roundabout.
National Highways advises: “If this closure impacts your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or delay your trip.”
While the tunnel will reopen once it is safe, motorists should be aware that additional closures are expected on key Kent routes throughout the week. These include the M2, M20, A2, A282, and M25. Drivers are urged to stay alert and plan their journeys carefully to avoid further disruption.
