Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has reignited the controversy surrounding JK Rowling and transgender issues. While he praised the “beautiful artists” behind the Harry Potter films, Garfield took a pointed jab at Rowling during a recent podcast appearance.
Speaking on the My Life In Movies podcast, Garfield said: “The films are really good. I know it’s controversial and we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now, through… she who shall remain nameless.” This remark was widely interpreted as a reference to JK Rowling, who has publicly supported groups such as For Women Scotland.
These groups played a role in influencing a landmark 2025 UK Supreme Court ruling that defined “woman” strictly by biological sex. Garfield admitted that because of Rowling’s stance on these issues, he finds it difficult to fully support the Harry Potter franchise.
Garfield’s comments underscore a significant divide within the Harry Potter cast. While many leading actors have distanced themselves from Rowling’s outspoken views on transgender matters, a few, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, John Cleese, and Tom Felton, have openly defended her. Notably, these actors had established their careers before the Harry Potter films made them famous.
On the other hand, several cast members who rose to prominence through the franchise have not hesitated to criticise Rowling’s position publicly.
Despite the ongoing controversies, the Harry Potter brand remains strong. A new television series is scheduled to premiere on HBO in late 2026, demonstrating that the magic of the wizarding world continues to captivate audiences regardless of the debates surrounding it.
