Christopher Bottoms, 66, affectionately known as ‘Big Chris’, tragically died in a two-car collision on Ship Road, Essex, at 11.05pm on January 20. The crash involved his Kia Picanto and a Mini Cooper.
‘Big Chris’ was widely loved for his huge heart and larger-than-life personality. He was a devoted father, husband, and son, described by his family as “immensely popular” among friends and relatives. “Chris was a loving and caring father, husband and son. There are no words that would do him justice when trying to describe him,” his family said.
Christopher Bottoms served 30 years with the Metropolitan Police before becoming a London black-cab driver. He retired fully in 2020 and enjoyed travelling the world with his family. A keen sports fan, he regularly supported his sons at Upminster Cricket Club and was a fan of Sheppey United FC, often ending his nights with his favourite local curry.
The family of Chris Bottoms are left reeling by the devastating loss. He was devoted to his wife Denise, sons Alex and Will, and his mother Sylv. They shared many moments playing cards, watching quiz shows, golfing, and enjoying his famous home-cooked meals. “His quick wit and sense of humour will be deeply missed. Chris had the unique ability to make anyone feel safe and calm, always ready with solid advice,” the family added.
The family also expressed gratitude to emergency crews and hospital staff for their care and for allowing them precious time to say goodbye.
The other vehicle involved, a Mini Cooper, carried 18-year-old passenger George Herd, who sadly died at the scene.
Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is currently investigating the crash. They are urging anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or other footage to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
