Chaos erupted in Chingford Mount early this morning as a fierce fire engulfed the Subway sandwich shop on Hall Lane. Thick, choking smoke billowed into the sky just after 7am, prompting a large emergency response and forcing the closure of the surrounding area.
Transport disruptions quickly followed as bus routes 158, 385, 444, and W16 were diverted to avoid the smoke and flames. The nearby Sainsbury’s supermarket also closed its doors amid the escalating situation. Hall Lane remains closed between Old Church Road and Tufton Road, with police cordons firmly in place to secure the scene.
Firefighters faced a dramatic battle against the blaze, deploying ten fire engines and around 70 personnel to tackle the fire. Flames continued to rage across the ground floor, first floor, and roof of the building, causing serious damage including a partially collapsed internal staircase and destruction of the roof. An air ambulance landed nearby as crews worked to control the fire, bringing the usually quiet high street to a halt.
Fortunately, one woman and a child escaped the building before firefighters arrived. Both were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service vehicles for treatment.
The London Fire Brigade received the initial call at 11:35am and quickly dispatched teams from Walthamstow, Chingford, Tottenham, and other nearby stations. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
Authorities continue to keep roads closed and warn the public to stay clear of the area due to ongoing traffic chaos and safety concerns.
