A man’s attempt to smuggle Class A drugs concealed inside a fake beer can has resulted in a prison sentence of more than three years. Patrick Smith, 34, was caught after a police chase and a subsequent search uncovered his stash.
On December 3, officers from the Neighbourhood Support Team spotted Smith in Woodston, Peterborough, talking to known drug users on Cubitt Way. When police moved to search him, Smith attempted a daring escape by mounting the kerb and narrowly avoiding officers and bollards as he fled.
Smith’s car was later found abandoned in Earl Spencer Court. Police discovered him nearby trying to leave the area on foot. A search revealed a large quantity of heroin and crack cocaine hidden inside a fake beer can that Smith had discarded near a fence where he had been lurking.
Smith, who lives on Sycamore Road in Whittlesey, pleaded guilty to charges including dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply heroin and crack cocaine, possession of criminal property (£290 in cash), and obstructing an officer.
On February 16, Cambridge Crown Court sentenced Smith to three years and two months in prison. He was also given a 43-month driving ban. Additionally, the court ordered the £290 cash to be handed over to the Cambridge Recovery Service.
