Seven people were seriously injured when a car rammed into a crowd in Derby city centre on Sunday, 29 March. The victims sustained grave but non-life-threatening injuries. Two of those injured have since been discharged from hospital, while five remain under medical care.
Derbyshire Police have detained a 36-year-old man originally from India in connection with the incident. The man is currently being questioned, with detectives having secured additional time to interview him as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “absolute carnage,” with injured individuals lying across roads and pavements. One witness told UKNIP that the chaos was overwhelming, while another said, “It’s so sad, everyone is so shook up. People have been crying. I just can’t believe something like this has happened.” Many people feared for friends who were in nearby bars during the incident. Another witness told the Derby Telegraph, “It was such a frightening experience. We just had to get out of there. It’s just so sad.”
Counter-terrorism officers have joined the investigation as part of standard procedure for incidents of this nature. Derbyshire Police have stated they are “keeping an open mind about potential motives” behind the crash.
Claire Ward, mayor of the East Midlands, urged local communities and agencies to come together to support those affected by the tragic event.
Police are appealing for anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage of the incident to come forward. Those with information are asked to quote incident number 1131 of 28 March when contacting authorities to assist with the ongoing investigation.
