A newly registered Christian charity has come under fire for sermons claiming that wives must not refuse their husbands sex or else face demonic consequences. The National Secular Society (NSS) has reported Wellspring Ministry to charity regulators after its chair of trustees, Bienvenue Hombessa (also known as Ben Bienvenue), made the incendiary claims.
In a 2022 sermon titled END TIME MESSAGE & SEX, Hombessa told married women: “You do not have authority over your body.” He warned that if wives keep saying no to sex—once, twice, three times—the devil will come in. Men in the audience shouted “amen,” while women were urged to speak up louder.
Hombessa added: “Within the context of marriage, your body, sister – it does not belong to you.” He also preached that sex in marriage is a right, not an option, telling husbands their wives should be their “first sheep” or else “you better get out of the problem.”
In a separate 2025 sermon titled UNDERSTANDING SEXUAL IMMORALITY, Hombessa condemned gay marriage and claimed homosexuality was once treated as a mental illness. He reminisced about “injecting” gay people in institutions and lamented: “Today it has become normal.”
He also attacked men who dress as women, calling them “revolting and repulsive,” but complained there is nothing that can be done against them due to legal protections. Hombessa griped that “our whole civilisation” is “absolutely antichrist” and moaned that the Bible is no longer taught in American schools because of protests by women.
Wellspring Ministry is based in Southwest London, with its church located in Reading. The charity was registered in January under the charitable purpose of “the advancement of religion,” which requires acting for public benefit.
The NSS has previously flagged religious groups, including Islamic and Christian charities, for promoting misogyny and homophobia—ranging from sermons justifying wife-beating to gay “conversion” messages.
NSS spokesperson Alejandro Sanchez said: “It is entirely unsurprising to find another religious charity implying that women cannot refuse sex and that gay men are mentally ill. The charitable purpose ‘advancement of religion’ is allowing misogyny and homophobia to be spread with impunity. It must be removed.”
He added: “Short of this, the Government’s recent proposals to empower the Charity Commission to shut down extremist charities should be implemented as a matter of urgency.”
