Chaos erupted at Crowborough Training Camp on Tuesday night as protesters blocked workers leaving the site, which is set to house 540 male asylum seekers. The military base became a battleground amid rising local outrage over the Home Office’s plans.
Tensions escalated when a person was reportedly assaulted and threatened during the protest. Sussex Police have opened an investigation as tempers flared over the controversial housing plan.
To regain control, officers imposed a dispersal order on roads around the barracks. The order, which expires at 9.15pm on Wednesday, gives police the authority to clear the area and prevent further disturbances. A police spokesperson said, “We will take robust action against anyone involved in criminality and anti-social behaviour.”
Local opposition has been growing for weeks, sparking a fierce public and political backlash. Crowborough is bracing for a showdown as the plan to temporarily house asylum seekers at the camp moves forward.
