The game was stopped in the 12th minute as fans, first responders, and club staff rushed to assist him. Sadly, Norm later passed away in hospital, leaving the Charlton community deeply saddened.
Charlton Athletic paid an emotional tribute on X, stating: “Family, friends and fellow supporters gathered at The Valley this morning to celebrate the life of Norman ‘Headphones Norm’ Barker. You’ll always be with us, Norm.” Supporters shared memories and messages across social media, honouring the man who had been part of the club’s soul for decades.
Norm was a familiar figure at Charlton matches for over 40 years, attending games regardless of weather conditions. Known for his trademark headphones, Charlton “Davy Crockett” hat, and a vest covered in football badges, he was a fan favourite and an essential part of the matchday atmosphere at The Valley.
In recognition of his decades of loyalty, Norm was awarded the prestigious Colin Cameron Supporter of the Year prize by manager Nathan Jones in 2025. He was also featured in Charlton’s 2020/21 season ticket campaign, further cementing his status as a club icon.
