Firefighters battled a fierce blaze at a flat on Russett Way in Lewisham last night, with ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters attending the scene.
The fire started in a communal area on the sixth floor, causing damage to part of the building. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
“The fire had started in an outdoor communal area off the sixth-floor lobby,” said Station Commander Richard Hamilton.
During the incident, firefighters heroically rescued a man and a woman who were stranded on scaffolding using a 9-metre ladder. Around 60 residents evacuated before the fire crews arrived, while others remained safely inside unaffected flats.
Lewisham Road was closed between Morden Hill and John Penn Street as a result of the fire. Brigade’s 999 Control Officers received 16 calls reporting the blaze.
The fire was first reported at 01:53 and was brought under control by 02:50. Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, Lee Green, and New Cross responded promptly to the emergency.
The Metropolitan Police and fire brigade are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
