Seven Humberside Police officers have been sacked after a series of “wholly inappropriate” WhatsApp messages came to light. The offensive content included sexist, racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic remarks, highlighting a serious issue within the force.
The dismissals were delayed due to legal reasons but relate to hearings held in 2019. Former Superintendent Ed Cook admitted to secretly filming women without their consent over a seven-year period, from 2011 to 2018, for his own sexual gratification. This disturbing revelation adds to previous reports of entrenched misogyny in police forces such as the Metropolitan Police.
A female Humberside officer recently told Sky News she felt “ostracised” after reporting a senior officer who manipulated her into a controlling relationship. She described misogyny as “a monster” haunting the force.
Two separate investigations uncovered gross misconduct. The first probe involved three officers who shared offensive videos and engaged in highly inappropriate chat. All three were found guilty of gross misconduct. The second investigation focused on six officers in a WhatsApp group exchanging vile messages filled with sexism, racism, and hatred. All six were dismissed.
Three officers were sacked without notice. One additional officer would have been dismissed if he had not already resigned. All four are now barred from policing. Two others received final written warnings for less serious involvement.
Assistant Chief Constable Dave Marshall described the behaviour as “deplorable” and confirmed the force acted swiftly and decisively. “Appropriate sanctions were applied without delay,” he said, pledging transparency following the conclusion of the legal process.
The mass dismissals send a strong message that bigotry and abuse will not be tolerated. Baroness Casey’s recent review into police sexism emphasises the urgent need for a nationwide crackdown. Police forces must urgently cleanse their ranks to foster a respectful and inclusive environment for both officers and the public.
