Tragedy struck The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon on the morning of July 6 when a Land Rover crashed into the school building on Camp Road, resulting in the death of a young girl and injuries to 16 others.
A woman in her 40s, believed to be the driver of the Land Rover, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
The local community is in shock and mourning following the incident. Residents from nearby New Malden, including Sophia Graham, 27, and Tayla Landsberg, 22, visited the police cordon to pay their respects and spoke about the impact on the neighbourhood.
“When we found out one of the kids had died, it was awful. When the police made their announcement, it was so sad to see even them get emotional. It’s made a big impact on everyone. Kids walk in the Common freely without thinking about it,” said Graham and Landsberg. Landsberg added, “It’s usually very peaceful, very bubbly with lots of fun activities going on.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to everyone affected, including the other children and adults injured as a result of this incident. I wish them all a full recovery.”
The Study Preparatory School released a statement expressing that they were “shocked and devastated” by the crash. The school extended condolences to the bereaved family and those injured, emphasising that the welfare of their students remains their top priority. They also promised ongoing support for pupils and families during this difficult time.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the crash is not being treated as terrorism-related. Their investigation remains open as they continue to gather information.
Outside the school, a growing collection of floral tributes serves as a poignant reminder of the young life lost and the community united in grief.
