GB News host Dan Wootton has strongly denied recent criminal allegations made against him on social media, describing the accusations as “untrue” and part of a “smear campaign.” Speaking on his prime-time programme, Dan Wootton Tonight, the 40-year-old journalist confronted the controversy directly, pledging transparency but firmly rejecting any wrongdoing.
The controversy arose following a report by Byline Times, which alleged potential criminal acts involving Wootton spanning over a decade. While Wootton vowed to address the claims, he refrained from issuing a full rebuttal, citing legal advice. He stated, “I have been the target of a smear campaign by nefarious players with an axe to grind.”
In a candid revelation, Wootton disclosed that he had experienced an abusive relationship, providing context to the recent attacks. He added, “While I have made errors of judgment in the past, the criminal allegations made against me are simply untrue,” condemning the “unspeakable slurs” directed at him online.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed they received information in June 2023 regarding alleged sexual offences linked to Wootton. Officers are currently reviewing the evidence but have not yet launched an active investigation. A police spokesperson said, “We are reviewing the information to determine whether any criminal offence has occurred.”
Regarding the allegations, Wootton’s former employer News UK, which owns The Sun, stated it is reviewing the claims but declined to provide further comment. Similarly, DMG Media, publisher of MailOnline, confirmed it is looking into the matter without offering additional details.
Wootton, who joined GB News in 2021 and has developed a loyal audience, was off-air last week due to a pre-planned family holiday in New Zealand. GB News has not released an official statement concerning the ongoing situation.
