The Metropolitan Police have taken swift action to clamp down on a viral TikTok trend that encouraged criminal activity on Oxford Street, one of central London’s busiest shopping destinations. In response to the growing disorder, three men were arrested and a dispersal order was imposed to restore order.
Following calls from Mayor Sadiq Khan and the Metropolitan Police, authorities banned gatherings in the Oxford Street area. The social media-fuelled stunt raised serious concerns about potential disorder and crime targeting high-street shops.
A 48-hour dispersal order was enforced starting from Tuesday at 11 a.m. until Thursday at 10 a.m. This order allows police officers to require individuals causing trouble to leave the area, aiming to prevent planned criminal activity. During the operation, three suspects were detained outside a fast food outlet near one of the targeted stores.
Local businesses, including opticians and pharmacies, closed their shutters by 3 p.m. amid rising tensions. Crowds gathered to observe the police activity, which led to temporary traffic halts on Oxford Street. Mounted officers and security teams collaborated to disperse the crowds and maintain public safety.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “We continue to have a highly visible presence in the Oxford Street area. Our officers have issued 11 dispersal orders. We will deal robustly with anyone coming to the West End intent on committing crime.”
The TikTok trend behind the disruption encouraged youths to target stores such as JD Sports, Primark, Urban Outfitters, and Disney on Oxford Street. The Met Police’s rapid response underscores their commitment to keeping London’s shopping district safe and peaceful.
