Two suspects were arrested following a high-speed police chase that ended in a dramatic crash in Orpington, Kent. The incident occurred when a VW Passat smashed into a property on Mountview Road, fracturing a gas main and triggering a major emergency response.
The crash happened shortly after 8.15pm, causing a significant gas leak. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and firefighters from Orpington quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. A toxic gas cloud forced the evacuation of nearby residents, while others were advised to keep their windows and doors closed for safety.
After the collision, the occupants of the vehicle fled in different directions into nearby woodland. Police launched a comprehensive search operation, deploying dog handlers and a helicopter to locate the suspects. Both individuals were soon spotted attempting to hide and were arrested with the assistance of a police dog from the Metropolitan Taskforce.
The suspects are currently in custody, and a significant police presence remains at the scene. Meanwhile, major sections of Perry Hall Road and Mountview Road are closed as gas engineers work to repair the damaged gas main. The disruption has also caused route 61 buses to be diverted.
An investigation into the police chase is ongoing. The Metropolitan Police have been contacted for comment regarding the incident.
