Rebecca Ikumelo, a loving mother of two and nursing graduate, tragically lost her life in a crowd crush outside the O2 Academy in Brixton. Known to her family as Tosin, meaning “Lord is Worthy,” Rebecca was described as tender, kind, and full of love. She was passionate about working with children and was cherished by everyone who knew her.
The deadly incident occurred on Thursday, December 15, when chaos broke out outside the venue on Stockwell Road. A large crowd attempted to force entry without tickets to see Nigerian music star Asake perform. Rebecca was one of three people seriously injured in the crush. Sadly, she passed away after sustaining critical injuries. Two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain in critical condition following the event.
The Metropolitan Police responded promptly, arriving within minutes of receiving reports at 9.04pm. During the disturbance, one woman was arrested for allegedly attacking a police officer. Specialist officers are providing support to Rebecca’s family while a post-mortem examination is scheduled at Greenwich Public Mortuary. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 6725/15Dec.
In response to the tragedy, Asake expressed his heartbreak on Instagram, stating, “I am devastated by the news that Rebecca Ikumelo has sadly passed away. My sincerest condolences to her loved ones. I am overcome with grief and could never have imagined this.” He added that his team is awaiting a full report from the venue management and police to understand what happened and encouraged witnesses to come forward.
London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, also commented on the incident, saying, “I am heartbroken by Rebecca’s tragic death. City Hall is working closely with venues and authorities to ensure nothing like this happens again. Rebecca had her entire life ahead of her — my deepest condolences go to her family and friends.”
