A member of the public spotted Constance Marten and Mark Gordon in Stanmer Villas, Brighton, just before 9.30pm on Monday, February 27. Sussex Police swiftly responded and arrested the pair. They remain in custody as police launch a frantic search for their newborn baby, who has not had any medical care since birth in early January.
Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, have been elusive since their car caught fire on the M61 motorway in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on January 5. Since then, they have been hitching taxi rides across the UK, dodging police at every turn. The Metropolitan Police believe the baby may be in danger as the couple have not sought medical help.
The couple travelled from Bolton to Liverpool, then Essex, East London, and finally Newhaven in Sussex. They were last spotted near the ferry terminal in Newhaven on January 8. Authorities think the pair have been sleeping rough in a blue tent, frequently moving to avoid detection. CCTV images showed them hiding their faces, making tracking tougher for cops.
Constance Marten hails from a wealthy aristocratic family and once showed promise as a drama student. She met Mark Gordon in 2016, and since then the couple slipped into a secretive lifestyle. In September last year, as Marten’s pregnancy advanced, they began shifting between rental apartments, keeping their whereabouts under wraps. It remains unclear whether the baby was born full-term or if there are any health problems.
