A shocking video has emerged showing Mohammed Abbkr being attacked by fellow inmates inside a show block at Winston Green Prison. Abbkr, 28, from Edgbaston, Birmingham, is accused of spraying a substance on two Muslim victims in separate incidents.
The Sudan-born accused appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court where he confirmed his details and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on April 20.
On February 27, Hashi Odowa, 82, was set on fire near a mosque in Ealing, West London, sustaining severe burns to his face and arms. Mohammed Rayaz, 70, also suffered serious burns after his jacket caught fire near a mosque in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Mr Rayaz required a skin graft and hospital treatment.
Mr Odowa has since been released from hospital and is recovering, while Mr Rayaz remains in serious but stable condition.
Members of the mosque communities condemned the attacks as “abhorrent and malicious attacks on two elders in our community.” A centre spokesperson stated, “As the blessed month of Ramadan begins, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
West Midlands Police have urged anyone with CCTV or doorbell footage related to the incidents to come forward. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are working closely with West Midlands detectives on the investigation.
Family members of Mohammed Rayaz described the horror of the attack as they rushed to help after hearing his screams. Solicitor Shahbon Hussain said neighbours assisted in extinguishing the flames and getting Mr Rayaz medical care.
MP Shabana Mahmood, who spoke to Mr Rayaz via video call, said the victim has been “touched by the outpouring of love and support” since the attack.
