Police forces in the United States and the United Kingdom have stepped up security to safeguard Jewish and Muslim communities as protests intensify across major cities amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
In response to the deadly violence between Israel and Hamas, law enforcement agencies are taking proactive measures to prevent any incidents. In the US, New York and Los Angeles, the country’s two largest cities, have increased police presence near synagogues and Jewish centres. Although no credible threats have been reported, authorities are acting swiftly to maintain order.
In New York, officials are preparing for a significant demonstration expected to take place in Times Square. Chief of Patrol John Chell stated, “Every member of the New York Police Department will be prepared and in uniform. Our top priority is public safety and quick response to any disturbances.” He emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to hate crimes and disorder.
Across the Atlantic, London’s Metropolitan Police are also on high alert ahead of a large “March for Palestine” rally scheduled for Saturday in central London. Over 1,000 officers will be deployed to manage the event, which is expected to draw thousands of participants. The Met issued a statement on Friday reaffirming their commitment to ensuring safe and peaceful protests while protecting all attendees and local residents.
The increased security measures come amid escalating tensions following deadly attacks in the region. Hamas militants launched a brutal assault on Israel, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,300 people. In retaliation, Israel conducted airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, which have claimed over 1,500 lives. The United Nations and various charities have raised concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis in the area.
In Brighton, authorities arrested a 22-year-old woman on suspicion of supporting Hamas during a protest, highlighting the vigilance of police forces monitoring potential threats during this turbulent period.
With protests and tensions rising on both sides of the Atlantic, police continue to prioritise public safety and the protection of all communities amidst the ongoing conflict.
